The RAPC chamber consists of a clear acrylic rectangular
enclosure divided into five equal sized compartments. On the
left side of the chamber is the start house constructed from
a dark acrylic. The start house has a hinged top to allow for
easy placement of the animal in the start house. The start house
is separated from the main chamber by a manually operated guillotine
door.
Each of the four chamber dividers has three one way doors.
Each door is equipped with a manual door lock and an electronic
motion
sensor.
On the back wall of the chamber are two Mylar speakers reproducing
white noise generated by the chamber controller.
The reward for the animal is placed in the right most compartment.
The chamber has a flat smooth removable acrylic floor which
is very easy to clean after each experiment.
The chamber has a tight fitting top cover which prevents the
white noise from one chamber interfering with animal performance
in an
adjacent chamber.
All door sensors and both speakers are connected through internal
chamber flat cable wiring to the left wall of the chamber where
an interface connector provides for a quick and rugged connection
to the controller.
All hardware is stainless steel.
All wiring is protected to prevent damage from the animals
and to allow easy cleaning.
Chamber Cleaning
Caution
Do not use any solvents
to
clean the chamber!
The chamber acrylic will crack and fracture if it comes
into contact with solvent based cleaners or any solvent based
substance,
such as alcohol.
Clean the chamber only with water based cleaner such as Roccal-D
Plus.
On older chambers first remove the four base thumb screws
to separate the bottom from the chamber.
Lift the chamber off its bottom plate and set behind the plate.
Clean the bottom plate.
Set the chamber on its back wall and clean the dividers, if
needed.
Replace the chamber back onto its bottom plate.
Note that the chamber is located on the bottom plate via the
four small corner blocks.
On older chambers replace the four base thumb screws.
Chamber Maintenance
The chamber requires no specific maintenance except for careful
cleaning during the experiment runs. The RAPC
User’s Guide provides information on replacement and adjustment of the doors
and door locks.
